Comic book adaptations are all the rage right now. They're tearing up the big screen as well as the small screens in our homes and we are loving them. Here are some recommendations from TV That Rocks of 7 comic book shows you should start watching.
Arrow
Following DC's Green Arrow, aka millionaire party boy Oliver Queen, Arrow splits its narrative between the present day where Oliver and his team act as vigilantes in Starling City, and flashbacks to the five years where Oliver was assumed dead after his boat was lost at sea.
The show sets a dark tone but also injects enough humour on occasion to lighten the mood. The main group of characters are interesting and likeable, with some captivating bad guys challenging them and fight scenes between them that are thrilling to watch.
The Flash
Co-existing in the same universe as Arrow, The Flash focuses on Barry Allen as he develops and has to get to grips with his new super speed and other abilities, with the help of his family and scientist friends at STAR labs.
The Flash has a much lighter tone than Arrow with funny and loveable characters leading the way. The special effects for the Flash's super speed are excellent and there are lots of other abilities on display from the meta-humans that they come up against. The cross-over episodes between Arrow and The Flash make great television, with the opposing moods of the two shows complementing each other perfectly.
Gotham
Another DC series, Gotham features a young Bruce Wayne and the events that lead him to eventually become Batman. More prominently featured in the show, however, is Jim Gordon in his role as an honest detective in a corrupt city, before he becomes commissioner.
It's an intriguing show to watch with the knowledge that we already have of the Batman universe. Early incarnations of many well known characters appear including Bruce's butler, Alfred, Catwoman, the Penguin and Riddler. The portrayal and development of the characters is fascinating to watch.
Supergirl
Debuting on CBS in 2015, Supergirl follows the adventures of Superman's cousin, Kara. The series starts with Kara at 24 years old getting into a situation which forces her to reveal her powers after she has kept them under wraps for so many years.
The show display's top-notch special effects and brilliant casting, with Melissa Benoist perfectly fitting into the title role. The show is filled with gripping action scenes and also contains a similar playfulness that we see in The Flash.
The Walking Dead
If you've had enough of the superhero genre, then we've also got zombies for you! Based on The Walking Dead comic book series by Robert Kirkman, the TV series begins after the outbreak of a zombie apocalypse, following a group of characters as they attempt to find resources and trustworthy allegiances in order to survive. All of this whilst killing zombies, of course.
The show is filled with all the suspense and gore you would expect from a great horror series, and the characters are developed well over the course of each season. The various challenges they come across along their journey will keep you tuning in week after week.
Daredevil
The first series from the Marvel universe to appear on our list, Daredevil follows Matt Murdock developing his persona of Daredevil whilst also trying to keep his masked activities secret from those around him.
The show is excellent at providing fascinating back stories of its key characters and developing the relationships between them. It has a very dark tone, adding to its brilliance, and contains well-choreographed fight scenes with plenty of violence.
Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.
Another Marvel series, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. comes from Joss Whedon, director of The Avengers. The series follows the Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement and Logistics Division, aka, S.H.I.E.L.D. through various missions and attempts to adapt to a world where everybody knows about the Avengers.
Although the main group of characters are regular, human agents, their unique personalities and the quick-witted dialogue they are provided with makes them a major draw of the show along with the flashy abilities we see from characters featured in each episode. Superhero fans will love the frequent references made to the Marvel Universe.
